We wouldn’t say that we didn’t see the signs, but there was a hunch. We beckoned. Luck came. Gas stove was the first, a consolation prize. Warner Bros. merchandise items were next. And a cash prize amounting to tens of thousands. It might not be the lotto jackpot, but we would get to that part.
Our inner feelings told us to take that chance. Lady Luck was about to smile on us.
We’ve been joining contests that offer prizes, cash in particular. We’ve been doing it since our student days. There’s no guarantee of winning big, but a consolation prize nudged us to join again. Hoping to win once more.
We couldn’t tell if lady luck would knock on our door again, but we liked our chances. True enough, it happened after we bought our first PCSO e-lotto ticket. We guessed the three numbers correctly. It may not be the lotto jackpot, but our gratitude overflowed. We believed that we could win a higher prize.
Our friends asked us whenever we shared our experience, but there was trepidation on our part. Will they take us seriously? Are they impressed with us? Will our experience prompt them to join contests? It doesn’t require hard work, but it would test our belief. After all, there are many factors to consider.
An affable Thai man urged us to go to Doi Suthep, a mountain not far from Chiang Mai. A Buddhist temple was perched atop the summit, offering an impressive view of this northern community and the surrounding areas.
Alas, it was humid when we got there. The golden stupa was surrounded by locals and tourists alike. This sacred place was unusually crowded on a weekday. We chose to find shelter. Finlay, a pleasant Scottish backpacker, came from nowhere.
We were about to ask Finlay about the places he has been to, and suggestions for a week-long itinerary in the Highlands, but he was eager to share his knowledge on fortune. There were three kinds of luck, he pointed out. I didn’t know that luck, or good luck, would come in many flavors.
Circumstantial luck means being in the right place at the right time. Then there’s resultant or outcome luck, where certain people have good outcomes due to factors beyond their control. And then there’s constitutive luck. It covers all the fortunate circumstances of our very existence.
We were about to press Finlay for details, and other types of good luck, but our haggard guide finally found us. She motioned us to go back to the van. (We must reach Chiang Rai before 2 PM.)
We thought about what Finlay told us during that muggy morning. The more we pondered about good luck, or the different flavors of good luck, then more our past experiences made sense.
You’re consistent with play. To put it in another way, lady luck smiles after you invest time and money on contests. Or lotto. This is a daunting task, as there’s no guarantee of winning a prize, or a lotto prize, on your first try. Or second. If not third. In other words, all the factors, which can influence the lotto results, are beyond your control. You can only keep on trying. And hope for the best.
You see a premonition in your dreams. My superstitious friend claims that seeing a poop in your dreams is a clear message. As a matter of fact, he keeps a (disgusting) photo of a toilet bowl the day after he spent the night there.
We were about to ask him if it did bring him good results when he told us that his pen friend agreed to meet him in Bangkok. It was nice to hear from him, but it was hard to tell if that would make anyone jump for joy. Show us the money!
You see symbols of luck. Did you notice the title of this post? It could’ve been any number, prime numbers in particular, but the number 8 is associated with abundance. We could include the sacred animals worshiped by our Asian brethren, but it would be better to talk about it in another post.
Your gut instinct tells you that it’s about to happen. We confessed that we didn’t pay attention to our gut instinct, but we recalled a nice feeling. Or a strange one.
A stranger’s advice prompted you to take a leap of faith. Finlay was absolutely right.
Your lucky charms could surprise you. We bought a silver glitter skull the day before we left for Bangkok. It would make a nice addition to our work station, we thought. We have no idea that such a thing can ward off bad luck. We learned about this piece of information from our Mexican colleague. Where did it originate? We’ll talk about it next time.
Our good fortune is revealed. Another colleague is into palm reading and feng shui. And that was what she told me the day before Chinese New Year. Chance? Or coincidence.
You feel like you’re born lucky. We choose luck to live rent free in our heads.
We plan to buy another lotto ticket next week. Lightning might strike us. Do you agree? Share your experience.
